Sadie and Jason – Bury St Edmunds Wedding Photography

Slideshow of Wedding Photography in Bury St Edmunds.

Hope you all had a great Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

Towards the end of 2011 I was fortunate enough be at The Angel Hotel to photograph Sadie and Jasons wedding on Armistice Day.
Over the last half of 2011 my work started to focus more on capturing emotions, stories and narratives in my wedding photography.

I’ve been a wedding photographer in Bury St Edmunds for a number of years now and my reputation for delivering beautifully sympathetic photography is growing far and wide.
Sadie and Jason aren’t from Bury St Edmunds, but they had heard about me and the wonderful documentary wedding photography that I produce. More and more couples are starting to appreciate the fine skills and narrative that comes from hiring a reportage wedding photographer to cover their day.

Being Armistice day, there were plenty of poppies on display and it made everything just that little bit more special. There are a few photographs in the slideshow where people are taking time to reflect on the sacrifices that others have made.

The beauty of reportage wedding photography is that it works best when you see the whole sequence, so please, take a few minutes to watch this slideshow.
If you’re having a wedding in Bury St Edmunds, and need a photographer, please give me a call.

Lisa and Ben – Newmarket Wedding Photography

Lisa and Ben.

I’ve been a little slack recently about putting up blogs of weddings I’ve been covering this summer.

This is the wedding of Lisa and Ben, which took place in Newmarket (well, Exning and Moulton to be exact) during the summer.
In typical British fashion we had all manner of weather during the day, from bright blazing sunshine to pouring rain – but through it all, Lisa and Ben had a great time.

I hope you enjoy this little taster of their wedding photography.

Claire and Simon – The Bildeston Crown and Stowmarket registry office

Claire and Simon – The Bildeston Crown.

At the end of August an e-mail dropped into my inbox. ‘We know it’s very short notice, but we’re hoping you’re available to photograph our wedding on the 3rd September..’
That was my introduction to Claire and Simon and their family wedding at The Bildeston Crown and Stowmarket registry office. As it turned out, I was free as I’d booked off the 3rd to recuperate after a hectic August – but the promise of an intimate wedding, a vintage racing Bentley and a great couple combined with the good weather we were having, made it too good to pass up.

My wife also was dead jealous as she has been angling for us to visit The Bildeston Crown for some time now to sample their, by all accounts, amazing food. So it was like a little recce there to check them out.. :D

The weather gods were kind again and the 3rd dawned bright and wonderful. Claire had phoned the evening before, just to let me know that she had arranged a surprise for Simon. He is a big vintage Bentley fan, and Claire had secretly arranged for one to take them to the registry office in Stowmarket. Quite often I’m traveling all over the countryside driving to weddings, so it was nice to be in my local area again. Elmswell is only about 15 minutes from Bildeston and it’s a lovely leafy drive.

But enough about my driving through sun dappled country lanes – this isn’t Top Gear after all – it’s a wedding photography blog!

Both Claire and Simon wanted a wedding photographer whose photographs spoke to them. It was important that they didn’t just end up with a collection of pretty photographs, but a visual story of their wedding. I love working with couples who share my approach to photography – just watching the day unfolding and photographing those tender little moments that all come together to create an emotional narrative.

The wedding itself was a lovely intimate affair at the Stowmarket Registry office and then we were back to The Bildeston Crown for the reception.

Having never been in The Bildeston Crown before I was in for a treat.

Once everyone had arrived back from the registry office, canapes were served. If you look closely at a few photographs you’ll spot the moment when one of Simons’ sons tasted his first oyster! Always a memorable occasion.. :D
The Bildeston Crown is well known locally for it’s excellent food, and I have to say that it looked fantastic – certainly by the time the speeches came around, empty plates abounded. Not only did we have a speech from the best man, but Claire’s brother in Australia sang her a song via Skype. Hows that for cool? :D

I think it’s safe to say that Claire and Simon thoroughly enjoyed their wedding at The Bildeston Crown. I know I enjoyed being their wedding photographer there and I hope to be back at The Bildeston Crown soon..

Sally and Mark – Haughley Park Barn

Sally and Mark – Haughley Park Barn and Bardwell church.

I first met Sally way back in January at a wedding fair we were both attending in Bury St Edmunds. Now I’ve written than I’m actually thinking, ‘hang on a mo, January wasn’t thaaaat long ago’. This year I’ve been so busy it just feels like it’s been going on forever. Oh and this kooky extended summer, delayed autumn is making the year feel longer.

But enough about the weather and how long the year has felt – lets talk about a wedding, after all this is a wedding photography blog!

So, I met Sally and Mark in January and they very kindly hired me to photograph their wedding at Bardwell church and then onto Haughley Park Barn.

On the day of the wedding itself, Sally, her mum and the rest of the bridesmaids, mums, kids and grandparents started off at the farmhouse, which is part of Haughley Park Barn. I love photographing in there – probably because it’s almost like my ideal house. The lines and the light inside make for some stunning photographs. Also having a whole house to yourself to get ready in I think makes the day feel just that much more special.

Quite often couples at Haughley get married at the venue itself, but for Sally and Mark a trip to their local church in Bardwell was the order of the day. So after spending time with Sally and getting some amazing photographs it was time to head off to Bardwell and catch up with Mark.

The vicar at Bardwell was great and let me photograph through the entire service. Some vicars don’t let wedding photographers so much as step foot in the church – occasionally with good reason because some photographers just create such a nuisance during the service. I’ve even heard of one photographer who stood up on the altar to get better photographs! That’s just utterly ridiculous behaviour and it gets us photographers who behave with respect during the service a bad name. Anyway, it was great to have a vicar who allowed me to discreetly photograph during the service.

After the service was over, everyone headed back to Haughley Park Barn. It’s only about twenty minutes in the car – so it was a nice little short trip.

Aside from the farmhouse, the backdrop of the main house and the barn itself – one of the joys of Haughley Park Barn is it’s setting. Sally and Mark had a whole little garden party vibe going on, so not were the gardens looking as good as ever, but there was a cool jumping castle for the kids, a handcrafted wishing well, some giant Jenga and of course, Pimms. I think there must be a law requiring every wedding in the summer to have Pimms on offer! :D

One of my favourite non-bridal photographs happened during the reception outside on the lawn. A Jenga tower of epic proportions was growing and growing – until – finally – the inevitable happened! Check out the result at the end of the slideshow.

If you’re thinking of getting married at Haughley Park Barn, give them a call and speak to Ellie or Rhona. I’m sure they would love to hear from you.

Harriet and Stavros – A Greeklish Wedding in the heart of Suffolk

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

This summer has been great, and in the middle of it all I had the pleasure of photographing Harriet and Stavros for their ‘Greeklish’ wedding.
From the off, the excitement and all round joie de vivre of this wedding was plain to see. Harriet and Stavros live in Athens and decided to not only have a wedding in Greece, but also a wedding in the heart of the beautiful Suffolk contryside. Some things are so good, you’ve just gotta do them twice!

So for the Greeklish wedding they flew over from Greece and got married again in front of all their English friends who couldn’t make it for their wedding in Greece. It was a great day and after a week of yukky rainy weather, the sun came out and matched the spirit of the wedding. I don’t think I’ve ever met such a bubbly and warm personality as Harriet, that was until I met Stavros. Their insatiable appetite for excitement was contagious and made for some stunning stunning photographs.

The service was held in St Michaels in Rendham, Suffolk. It’s only a short walk from Harriet’s folks’ house so everything was super laid back and chilled. Afterwards, unknown to Harriet, her dad had organised a tractor to take them to the reception. Apparently this was an in joke as just the week before he’d mentioned that transport had been organised. ‘I bet it’s something dodgy like a tractor..’ was the response apparently.. :D Well, the tractor dutifully arrived and looked amazing. Cue massive smiles all round.

I’ve always made a point of just letting the story of a wedding show itself to me. Each wedding I photograph has it’s own personality, it’s own life – and boy oh boy, did this wedding ever have it’s own personality! Maybe it’s because I come from a small family, but I just love to see large emotional gatherings. There is something so genuine when you look at family being natural with each other – the laughter, the smiles, the hugs, the kisses. You just can’t pose that kind of stuff. It’s so delicate – it can’t be forced through some stuffy line ups and coat hanger grins.

If you want to check my availability for your wedding – please get in touch, I’d love to hear from you.
